He and Brosnahan have incredible chemistry together on screen, and their shared earnestness over art feels incredibly refreshing against the backdrop of a world largely composed of consumer consumption. His portrayal of a complex and difficult artist, Declan Howell, is a gripping one that steals the entire episode. Rufus Sewell pulls off an incredible performance in an already memorable episode. His offer is tempting – it’s a quick way for Midge to get where she wants to go, just at the expense of pushing for her true potential. While there’s no word on another appearance, it would be fun to have another interaction between the two now that they’re on more even footing. (And the interaction with his agent offers up some classic Susie lines.) Randall has his own comedy career, and he and Midge do a great job of seamlessly pooling their talents together to create magic. Randall (Nate Corddry) shows up at a pivotal moment in Midge’s career she hasn’t exactly taken off yet, but she’s hesitant to really cut her teeth at Greenwich Village clubs - which is where fellow party guest Randall comes in. It would be a great way to show she can do his act better. And while Kahn hasn’t reappeared yet, it would be great to have him show up just in time to catch Midge mid-performance. It’s the kind of casual sexism and underestimation that fuels Midge’s comedy.

As a budding comedian herself, she’s been listening and following other comics’ sets and taking notes. Midge runs into Kahn at a club where he’s performing a set. Marty Kahn (Steve Rosen) is a fun foil to some of the other male comics, like Lenny, portrayed throughout the series. Will he reappear? Maybe if Midge does another racy set. In fact, multiple comics discuss getting arrested for sets. He also helps contextualize the period and the strict decency laws of the time. Hackett’s appearance is brief, but he’s a great small-time villain that shines a light on the hurdles Midge must overcome. Grifasi does a wonderful job of conveying Hackett’s moral outrage, gleefully holding her in contempt of court when she starts to swear. From his first “little lady”, it’s clear that Hackett doesn’t think kindly of Midge and her act. The world Midge inhabits is one rife with sexism, and Judge Hackett (Joe Grifasi) definitely doesn’t hold back on his views of morality and “womanhood”. Not to mention he helps give us a snapshot back into Midge and another main character, her husband Joel, and their mutual love for comedy.

For starters, his character ends up introducing Lenny Bruce, who becomes an important figure in Midge’s personal and professional life. However, he ends up being important for several reasons. Unfortunately, with Gottfried’s passing, fans won’t be seeing his character again. Thankfully, it’s already been announced that the fifth (and final) season has been given the green light. This season had some much anticipated and highly talked about cameos: from Milo Ventimiglia’s guest appearance in episode 7 to the unexpected joy of John Waters’s mustache.
